Bird of Paradise
Bird of Paradise
Pastel on velour paper (P.V.A fixative)

Bird of Paradise is a metaphor for a conversation with nature. In 1954 I was able to spend a few months in the woods, to be empathetically part of nature. I stop becoming whoever I am, and I become that flower, that plant, that insect, by painting them. These are self portraits of myself as reflected in nature, where I become that part of the universe that is that object.
